DRUNKEN NIGHTS I

DRUNKEN NIGHTS I was the very first phase of our project to bring live performance into pubs. We wanted to present new work right in the public bar spaces – not hidden away upstairs or in a function room – so that we could reach people who wouldn’t normally go to the theatre or a gallery. We presented six evenings of performance across London; fusing stand-up, theatre, live-art, music, dance and even karaoke – all created specifically for a pub/bar setting.

Events took place at The Trafalgar Arms in Tooting, The STAR* in Highgate and Rich Mix in Bethnal Green. 18 artists were selected from over 120 proposals. Over three nights these artists presented short performance ideas, inspired by pub quizzes, stand-up comedy, binge drinking, karaoke, confessions, and even Eastenders boozer ‘the Queen Vic’.

Three artists were selected to receive development support throughout December 2012 and January 2013, with residencies at Rich Mix in Bethnal Green, a small budget, production support from Drunken Chorus and mentoring sessions with established artists, Franko B, Cathy Naden (Forced Entertainment) and Adam James.

Two white female performers are dressed in black underwear. They smear gravy all over their bodies. There are slices of bread tucked into their bra straps. One performer looks down and the other smiles manically at the audience.
